Be transported to European medieval times in France this Friday night when the Alliance Francaise of San Francisco hosts a fascinating lecture by Stanford professor Patrick Hunt entitled, “THE ART OF MEDIEVAL ILLUMINATIONS”.

An excerpt from the invite:

“From the Carolingian Renaissance onwards, illuminated manuscripts flourished as never before. In monastic, aristocratic and university settings, among others, scribes worked alongside artists to produce gospels, prayer books, psalms, missals, breviaries, books of hours, rediscovered Classical works and history and many other texts illustrated with intense beauty of colors often derived from crushed semiprecious stones and decorated with gold and silver, especially venerated Biblical passages for private meditation. The art of French illumination shows exquisite Medieval artistry, humor and love of detail as well as craftsmanship, often done at priceless expense as devotional expression or for royal libraries.”

Event begins at 6pm, this Friday, 1/13 @ Alliance Francaise on Bush street. $55 per person, wine and hors d’oeuvres included. RSVP by check to reserve your spot:

Nienke Hohmannat, 2275 Broadway Street, Apt. 206, SF, CA 94115

No payment at the door, seating is limited.

Joann Sfar’s film is a completely original take on one of France’s greatest mavericks, the illustrious and infamous singer-songwriter, Serge Gainsbourg (Eric Elmosnino). Born Lucien Ginsburg to Russian-Jewish parents, Serge evolves from precocious child in Nazi-occupied Paris, to small time jazz musician, and finally international pop superstar. Along the way, he romances many of the era’s most beautiful women, including Juliette Greco (Anna Mouglalis), Brigitte Bardot (Laetitia Casta) and Jane Birkin (Lucy Gordon).

Employing a witty surrealistic style and a soundtrack that showcases the musician’s greatest hits, GAINSBOURG: A HEROIC LIFE is a sensual delight and a quintessential time capsule of 1960’s Paris. http://www.gainsbourgaheroiclife.com for details.

Les Petit Chefs is a San Mateo-based culinary school designed to teach kids the basics of healthy cooking in a super fun atmosphere. The classes are age specific (as young as three!) and teach nutrition, kitchen safety and recipe following, all while kids are cooking up a storm.
